Rio 2016: Nigeria Dream Team Beat Japan 5-4

Nigeria’s men’s football team made an extraordinary start to their Rio 2016 Olympic campaign, beating Japan 5-4 in Manaus on Thursday just hours after landing in Brazil following a travel mix-up.

The team was stranded in Atlanta for days amid a bizarre saga that saw flights canceled because of missed payments and because a plane was too small, before eventually taking off on the morning of the game.

The Nigerian squad eventually landed in Manaus at 2:19 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, with the game against Japan beginning at 9 p.m.

However, despite what would seem to be the worst kind of preparation, Nigeria produced an inspired display to sink Japan. The contest was evenly matched in the opening stages, with honors remaining even following a frantic opening burst that produced four goals in 10 minutes.

Sadiq Umar put Nigeria ahead just 5 minutes in before Shinzo Koroki equalized moments later from the penalty spot. Oghenakaro Etebo put the African side back in front, only for Takumi Minamino to again make things all square.

Etebo put Nigeria back in front after 41 minutes the tone was set and completed his hat trick after 50 minutes, calmly slotting home his fourth to make it 5-2 on 65 minutes.

There was still time for some late drama, as Nigeria showed fatigue as the match wore on. Takuma Asano pulled one back with 20 minutes to go, and Musashi Suzuki narrowed the gap to one deep into injury time.

However, Nigeria’s night of glory was completed seconds later when the referee blew for full-time, finishing off a remarkable, and exhausting day for a team whose plight captured international attention and sympathy.

Pep Guardiola to sign these two world class players for £92m!

Pep Guardiola has confirmed the double pursuit of Leroy Sane (Schalke) and John Stones (Everton), with reports claiming that Manchester City will pay £92m for the pair.

Guardiola spoke to reporters on Thursday following Manchester City’s penalty shoot-out victory over Borussia Dortmund in the International Champions Cup in China.

The ex-Bayern Munich manager said that he would be ‘very happy’ if Sane completes a move to City, which would be worth around £42m according to reports.

Sane, 20, is a highly-rated forward with the ability to play on the wing, as well as in an advanced midfield role.

John Stones on the other hand, who turned 22 in May, has been tipped to join City for a staggering £50m fee.

SHOCKING: Mourinho has asked this SUPERSTAR to leave the club

Yesterday, Bastian Schweinsteiger announced his retirement from international football.

The German midfielder broke the news on his social media accounts just hours after he was told he isn’t needed at Old Trafford. He wrote;

“I have asked the head coach not to consider me for selection for the national team in the future as I would like to retire.

“I give my thanks to the fans, the team, the German FA and the coaches of the national team.

“In 120 international games I was allowed to have beautiful and successful moments beyond description for my country.” Schweinsteiger told his social media fans.

Prior to his announcement, reports had suggested the player will be a high-profile casaulty under new manager Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese manager doesn’t see Schweinsteiger as part of his plans for the upcoming season, and he will be let go alongside a number of others, including Adnan Januzaj, Tim Fosu-Mensah and Tyler Blackett.

The player moved to Manchester United at the beginning of last season, but found game time limited under then United boss Louis van Gaal, mainly due to injury problems.

‘Pogba Fee Is Crazy’- Wenger

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has blasted the gigantic price tag set by Juventus on Paul Pogba, calling it ‘absolutely crazy’.

Manchester United are reported to be in pole position to land the France International, in a fee believed to be in excess of €100m.

“The Pogba transfer fee? It is completely crazy if you cannot afford to pay it. If you can afford to pay it you can justify it. But it is completely crazy if you compare it to normal life. That is for sure,” Wenger told the Daily Mail.

“But we live in a world where every activity that is worldwide makes a lot of money. Football has become a worldwide competition and that is why clubs can afford to do it.

“Does it make sense in the way the player can give you that investment back? Nobody ever could calculate.

“Since I am in this sport I always thought the record cannot go higher and I was always wrong. Maybe in a few years it will be 200, 300, who knows…”

Arsene Wenger’s team will play Liverpool on August 14th 2016, in their first game of the new English Premier League season.

‘It Was Easy To Snub Arsenal’- Vardy

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy has revealed it was an easy decision to remain at the club over a proposed move to Arsenal.

The England international was believed to be heading to the Emirates after the North London club triggered his contract, but the player eventually signed a contract with the reigning champions during the Euro 2016 tournament.

Now the 29-year old striker has revealed he was never close to joining Arsene Wenger’s team, insisting it was an ‘easy’ decision to stay his present club.

“[Turning down Arsenal] wasn’t that big when I think about it. It was quite easy and this is where I want to be,” He told Sky Sports.

“I was away with England so a move to Arsenal wasn’t close.

“No I didn’t speak to them.

“There’s a lot of unfinished business here. I feel that the club is only going one way and that is forward, that’s why I want to be a part of it.”

Manchester City Sign Leroy Sane For £37m

Manchester city have signed Schalke forward, Leroy Sane for the sum of £37m on a five-year deal after he completed his medicals at the Etihad on Monday afternoon.

He is Pep Guardiola’s fifth signing this season and he will join new arrivals, Gundogan and Nolito in hoping to have a successful spell at the club.

The 20-year-old said, “I feel really good, I’m happy to be here and happy that it has all worked out. Now I can settle here in Manchester and play for City,”

He admitted that one of the factors which convinced him to make the move was Pep Guardiola himself; “I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players. I think he can make me a more complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.”

Manchester City sign Schalke Star

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Leroy Sane from Schalke on a five-year deal.

The 20-year old was reportedly linked with many clubs but decided to join the Manchester club on a transfer fee believed to be in excess of £37 million.

“I feel really good, I’m happy to be here and happy that it has all worked out. Now I can settle here in Manchester and play for City,” He was quoted saying.

“One of the reasons I decided to join City was Pep Guardiola; he convinced me to come here and that I can continue to progress. I know I will learn a lot under him and now I can take the next step in my career.

“I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players.

“I think he can make me a more complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play but I think I can adapt very quickly.”

Sane was named in Germany’s Euro 2016 squad after scoring 13 goals in 57 appearances for Schalke.

He becomes new boss Guardiola’s fourth signing, including acquisitions of Ilkay Gundogan, Nolito, Aleks Zinchenko and Aaron Mooy.

And the former Bayern Munich manager was quick to praise his new recruit.

“At 20, he is still developing as a player but he is already a member of the German national side and I think he will be a fantastic asset to our Club. We are very happy he decided to join us.”

FIFA Picks Oliseh As Pundit For Rio Olympics

Sunday Oliseh in Supersport Studio.

In a move that the NFF (Nigeria Football Federation) would despise, Sunday Oliseh, the former Super Eagles boss, will be a pundit for Nigeria’s football team group games at the Rio 2016 Olympics starting this August.

The 41-year old is one of the football experts that have been selected by FIFA to analyse games in the competition.

And the former Borussia Dortmund and Juventus midfielder didn’t waste time to express his delight on the job, confirming via his twitter account.

“Blessed to be honouring Nigeria as one of 6 chosen FIFA experts Worldwide to work on the Olympics. Lovely feeling,” He wrote on Twitter.

The games Oliseh will analyse are Dream Team VI’s opener against Japan and the subsequent fixture against Colombia.

Sunday Oliseh played for Nigeria at the 1996 Olympics in USA, where they eventually won gold.

Arsenal hold final talks with 2 world class players

With the start of the Premier League season just 12 days away Arsenal fans are growing increasingly worried over Arsene Wenger’s inactivity in the transfer market.

It has been over two months since the club announced the capture of Granit Xhaka and there is still plenty of business to be done in the market, but reports today suggest Arsenal are intensifying their activity with talks with both Riyad Mahrez and Mauro Icardi.

Both players have been consistently linked with moves to the Emirates and reports in Algeria and Italy claim that the pair are eager to join the London club.

According to claims in Mahrez’s homeland, he has agreed to join Arsenal after turning down a new £100,000-a-week contract at Leicester.

Arsenal are said to be ready to pay around £40million to land Mahrez.

Algerian newspaper Le Buteur say the 25-year-old and his agent spoke with Wenger, who convinced him to move to the Emirates.

It is added that Leicester have been angered by the presence of Wenger and his assistant Steve Bould during their 4-0 friendly defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

For Mauro Icardi, Arsenal are hopeful of landing the Inter Milan captain who netted 16 goals as his side finished fourth in Serie A last season.

Yet ANOTHER Leicester player Is on his way out of the club

Another player among the 2015/16 winning Leicester City squad is about to hand in a transfer request, says Daily Star.

The newspaper says Tottenham Hotspurs are preparing a £20million bid for Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater, with another unnamed team also interested.

Drinkwater’s performances from midfield last season helped inspire Leicester to the Premier League title.

But slow progress in contract negotiations has alerted clubs to his potential availability.

If the deal goes through, the player will join N’golo Kante (Chelsea) and Riyad Mahrez (wanted by Arsenal) to depart Claudio Ranieri side.

Chile Rout Mexico 7-0 In Copa America Q’Final

                                           Four Goal hero Eduardo Vargas

Sometimes an unbeaten run can end in complete and utter humiliation.

For Mexico, unbeaten in 22 games, the prospect of facing Chile in the Cops America Quarter Final wasn’t particularly daunting.

Most pundits predicted a thrilling end to end encounter which would test Chile’s resolve to retain the Copa America title.

In the end, it was a ridiculously one sided affair as the Chileans pressed Mexico from start to finish. It will be hard to find a performance poorer than Mexico’s on Saturday night.

Eduardo Vargas put the Mexican defence to the sword, scoring four goals while Mauricio Isla added a brace.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez who has been criticized for a recent loss of form was in sensational form as he also added a goal.

Perhaps the biggest indication of how dire Mexico were was that it took 55 minutes before they registered a shot on target.

There’s no doubt that Mexico’s coach Juan Carlos Osorio will be in for a very painful post mortem. Will he go the way of Dunga?

On a totally lighter note, a few mischevious fans have said Mexico should have built Donald Trump’s wall across their goalpost!

Cleveland Cavaliers Clinch NBA Title

Despite being 3-1 down at a point in the NBA finals, the Cleveland Cavaliers managed a comeback.

They are the first team in franchise history to win an NBA title after going 3-1 down. The Cavs had Lebron James and Kyrie Irving to thank for winning games 5 and 6 in order to force a crucial winner takes all game 7.

In the end two time MVP, Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors were defeated 93-89 in a loss which is sure to hurt.Lebron James was voted Finals Most Valuable Player as the he secured a triple double in game 7.

His teammate Kyrie said,

“I’m very thankful that I have a guy like that that’s leading our team that I can continue to learn from. And when my time does come of being able to lead a franchise and see the landscape of how it’s supposed to be composed, I watched Beethoven right now of LeBron James compose a game.

“He had a freakin’ triple-double in Game 7 of an NBA Finals game. There will still be naysayers, but I know it doesn’t matter to him. It doesn’t matter to me. All that matters is we’re champions and our whole team is etched in history.”

Lebron said after the game, “I came back to bring a championship to our city. I knew what I was capable of doing. I knew what I learned in the last couple years that I was gone, and I knew if I had to — when I came back, I knew I had the right ingredients and the right blueprint to help this franchise get back to a place that we’ve never been. That’s what it was all about.”

Real Madrid beats Atletico in penalty shootout to win Champions League title.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winning penalty in a shootout to give Real Madrid victory over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League final which finished 1-1 after extra time on Saturday.

Ronaldo sent Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak the wrong way from the penalty spot, sealing a 5-3 shootout win, then stripped off his shirt to celebrate with Madrid fans behind the goal.

Ronaldo's spot-kick was decisive after Atletico defender Juanfran struck the post with his team's fourth kick.

Real Madrid's record-extending 11th European title also denied its city rival the most coveted trophy in club soccer for the second time in three years.

Atletico was left with bitter memories of its third loss in a European Cup or Champions League final.

Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane became just the seventh man to both coach and play for European champion teams.

Just like the 2014 final, a Madrid derby finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. This time, it was Real Madrid instead of Atletico in the role of long-time leader giving up a late equalizer.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who struck in stoppage time two years ago, showed a forward's hunger to score in the 15t by forcing the ball past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak from close range.

Atletico substitute Yannick Carrasco showed the same desire to level in the 79th, outmuscling Lucas Vazquez to shoot Juanfran's pass across goal high into the net.

Atletico missed a penalty kick in the 48th, given for Pepe's clumsy tackle through Fernando Torres.

Antoine Griezmann's kick struck the cross bar, repeating his failure to beat goalkeeper Keylor Navas from the spot in a league match this season. The France forward scored in the shootout.

Atletico raised its game after Griezmann's miss but the clearest shooting chance for defender Stefan Savic also failed to force a save from Navas.

Ramos showed how a defender, tough and often cynical, should finish. As noted for his red cards as goals, he has now scored in two Champions League finals to stand with Real Madrid stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul in the competition's history book.

Atletico's defense had fair warning of Real Madrid's threat, and its own weakness on the night, from free kicks as early as the sixth minute.

Again, Bale was fouled deep in Atletico territory, then fired a dipping cross. Attackers again got in front of defenders and both Karim Benzema and Casemiro seemed to deflect the ball toward Oblak staying on his goal-line. This time, the Slovenia goalkeeper blocked with his left leg.

When Madrid did score nine minutes later, Benzema was again in space but failed to connect on Bale's flick before Ramos pounced.

Benzema could have likely sealed the win in the 70th when sent clear on goal but Oblak blocked the Frenchman's shot with his chest.

Atletico was soon level when Carrasco exploited substitute Vazquez, a midfielder who had just come on for Benzema.

Nigerians stunned by Chelsea’s John Terry and Mikel Obi no-show at Yobo Testimonial.

Nigerians have expressed their disappointment at John Terry and John Obi Mikel missing out on Joseph Yobo Testimonial staged in Port Harcourt on Friday.

The Chelsea stars were confirmed to participate in the highly publicized game to give the former Super Eagles’ captain a grand curtain call from professional football, but that was not to be as fans left the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium unhappy as most because of the duo.

Mikel had been excused by the Nigeria Football Federation from the international friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg in order to participate in the game to honour the former Eagles’ skipper.

And for Terry, he was a sure bet to grace the occasion because of his non-involvement in England’s squad for Uefa Euro 2016 billed for France next month, and because the organisers had confirmed his participation few days to the game.

Even few hours to kick-off news filtered around that the duo were in town and on team list for the game, they were named among the substitutes. Surprisingly, the duo did not turn up and no reason was given for their absence.

“This would have been the greatest day of my life if had seen John Terry physically in Nigeria. I’m a strong admirer of the Chelsea skipper and I feel sad not seeing him play this game,” a fan told Goal.

Another said: “I travelled from Accra [Ghana] to Nigeria with my friends to watch my Chelsea idols [Mikel and Terry]. So annoyed they are not here because the organisers have assured on their participation. Had I known, would have watched the game on my television at home.”

However, in the English Premier League stars' absence, Austin Okocha, Samuel Eto’o Fills and Sammy Appiah entertained spectators with blistering skills in the nine-goal thriller.

Eto’o was involved in a funny scene when he asked Okocha to be substituted due to the midfielder’s stunning skills which continuously prised open his side.
The first half ended 4-3 with Yobo scoring just before the break to keep the scores close.
